And, we have a long record of investing in research and development, with a focus on sustaining and enhancing forest health and optimizing the efficiency and environmental performance of our facilities.
Forest Management Research
We have supported projects aimed at improving understanding of forest ecosystems and management of forest values, including:
• Waterways and water quality
• Forest inventories, stand growth and regeneration and healthy forest landscape benchmarks
• Mountain pine beetle mitigation and rehabilitation
• Biodiversity assessment
• Wildlife habitat protection – grizzly bears, caribou, amphibians, songbirds and birds of prey
Mill Process Research
Our mill research initiatives have been focused on maximizing production efficiency, product quality and environmental performance, including projects aimed at:
• Optimizing pulp properties for enhanced performance in existing products and innovative applications
• Reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
• Reducing water usage and the consumption of chemicals and other inputs
• Deriving value from waste streams — using pulp sludge in oil & gas site remediation and agriculture; using pulp effluent to generate green energy
