Whitecourt Chamber of Commerce names Millar Western “Corporate Citizen of the Year”

At its President’s Gala, held November 3rd, the Whitecourt Chamber of Commerce honoured contributions made to community betterment by presenting awards to town residents and businesses. This year’s recipients included Millar Western, which was named “Corporate Citizen of the Year.”

In presenting the award, outgoing Chamber President Leo Zelinski noted the company had long been an economic pillar and an integral part of the social fabric of Whitecourt, saying “Millar Western has always had a tradition of supporting causes aimed at enhancing the quality of life in our community.” Mr. Zelinski pointed to the new Allan and Jean Millar Centre, the Forest Interpretative Centre, Rotary Park and other initiatives as examples of the company’s commitment to enhancing the wellbeing of the community and its residents.

Millar Western’s Dave Martell, Whitecourt Pulp Mill Manager, accepted the award, saying he was proud to receive it on behalf of the Millar family and all employees of the company.

Also honoured at the gala were Scott Safety Supply Services as “Small Business of the Year,” Your Dollar Store with More for having the “Staff of the Year,” and Mr. Derek Schlosser, who won the distinction of being named Whitecourt’s “Citizen of the Year.” On hand to congratulate the award winners on behalf of the Governments of Canada and Alberta were Yellowhead MP Rob Merrifield and Whitecourt-Ste. Anne MLA George VanderBurg.
