“Virtual open house” offers a look at Millar Western’s 2007 Annual Operating Plans for harvest, reforestation and other forest management activities in the Whitecourt area.
Each year, Millar Western’s Woodlands team hosts community open houses to invite public input into our forest management activities for the year ahead, and to update residents on key issues. As well as unveiling our 2007 plans for harvesting, tree planting and vegetation management, staff at this year’s open houses are addressing issues such as the impact of the mountain pine beetle, the importance of the company’s forest certifications, and the role of our new Public Advisory Committee.
In the year ahead, Millar Western will be focusing activities in the Baseline Lake, North Goose, Ocelot and Sakwatamau areas within our Forest Management Agreement (FMA) region, as well as the Edith Lake, Edith Lake East and Upper Swan River areas near Swan Hills and the Grizzly area in ANC’s FMA. In total, we plan to harvest 670,000 m3 of coniferous and 394,000 m3 of deciduous timber on 5,316 hectares of forest. Committed to sustainable management, we will be planting two-to-three seedlings for every coniferous tree harvested, for a total of approximately six million trees; deciduous trees will be regenerated naturally.
Those unable to attend this year’s open houses in Fox Creek (May 14), Swan Hills (May 15), Whitecourt (May 26), and Ft. Assiniboine (May 30) in person are invited to tour a “virtual open house.” Click the links below to view a map of planned areas of activity, to read posters discussing key issues, and to submit a form if you would like to join our stakeholder registry and receive ongoing updates.
