Millar Western’s Gareth Carey wins Canadian Institute of Forestry award

Congratulations to Millar Western Silviculture Supervisor Gareth Carey, named the 2020 Canadian Institute of Forestry Gold Medal winner for his achievements as a student in the NAIT Forest Technology program. As a recent NAIT grad, Gareth already had two seasons of student internship work with Millar Western under his belt when he was offered a permanent position with the company. Now, he’s putting his knowledge, technical skills and work experience to good use supervising reclamation operations and permanent sample plot (PSP) programs to ensure successful forest renewal, managing controlled burning of harvesting residuals to reduce wildfire risk, even helping lead forest education events for students and teachers. “I really value the variety in my job, and the fact it brings me out into the woods most days,” says Gareth. “And I like knowing my work makes a difference – one I can see now and will continue seeing for decades, as I walk through a healthy forest.”
Presented to a single recipient in each of Canada’s forestry degree and diploma schools, the CIF Gold Medal Awards recognize outstanding scholarship and citizenship among the previous year’s graduates. Gareth notes, “I studied with a lot of great people at NAIT, so it’s a real honour to be nominated by my instructors and recognized by the CIF.”
Well done, Gareth!
