Millar Western forest operations ISO certified

Following successful completion of independent audits of its woodlands operations in both Whitecourt and Boyle March 10th , Millar Western has achieved certification of its Environmental Management Systems under the ISO 14001 standard, effective March 29, 2005.

ISO certification is a significant accomplishment, reflecting the skill and commitment of staff and contractors working in the company’s forest areas. Like the company’s previous certification under FORESTCARE, and the additional standards to be pursued in future, ISO certification serves to demonstrate responsible care of the forest to neighbours, customers and other stakeholders.

Millar Western’s next step in third-party certification is to work toward attaining the Canadian Standards Association’s CSA Z809 Sustainable Forestry Standard – widely viewed as among the most demanding of the internationally-recognized systems, particularly in the areas of public consultation and stakeholder participation. The CSA program has recently gained endorsement under the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC), a move that has greatly increased the program’s recognition in global markets.
