PAC learns ABC’s of tree planting
Every summer, thousands of tree planters head into Canada’s forests, planting many millions of trees to help renew healthy forests across the country. This year, they were joined by a small but intrepid group — Millar Western’s Public Advisory Committee (PAC) members who, during their annual field tour on July 6, learned about the planning and effort that goes into reforestation, then took the opportunity to plant some trees of their own.
In a cutblock northwest of Whitecourt, the group was introduced to the science and regulatory requirements of forest renewal by our Silviculture Supervisor, Brent Huizinga. After a tree-planting demo, PAC members tried their hand at forest restoration, helped by Brent, Forestry Superintendent Tim McCready and Operations Supervisor Tom Listhaeghe. Our public advisors soon learned that tree planting is hard work — all enjoyed the day, but none will be turning pro any time soon!
