Vision 2020 offers a new outlook for Canada’s forest industry
As a member of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), Millar Western is supporting the launch of Vision 2020, which sets ambitious new goals for the forest products industry in the areas of products, people and environmental performance. By 2020, the industry will seek to renew its workforce with at least 60,000 new recruits; to deliver a further 35% reduction in the sector’s environmental footprint; and to generate an additional $20 billion in economic activity through innovation and market development.
Vision 2020 is just latest FPAC initiative to enhance awareness of Canada’s progressive and innovative forest products sector. Recent leadership efforts have included the launch of the Future Biopathways Project, aimed at achieving opportunities to produce a wide range of bio-products from wood fibre, and the historic Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, which has forest companies and environmental and conservation groups working together, on the ground and in the marketplace, to promote sustainable forest management.
Vision 2020 highlights “Canada’s Natural Advantage”:
- Canada has 400 million hectares of forest cover — about 10% of the world’s total forest and 30% of the boreal forest.
- Canada has more than 90% of its original forest — more than any other country.
- Forests are renewable and will be available for the benefit of all future generations — all
harvested areas are regenerated, with about 650 million seedlings planted each year. - Demand for products made from wood is growing along with the world’s population and prosperity — Canada is a reliable and secure supplier of renewable forest products.
