Company achievements recognized at AFPA conference

At its annual awards dinner, held September 24 in Jasper, Alberta, the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) celebrated excellent performance among member companies, contractors and employees. Millar Western received awards in three categories.

Granted on the basis of audit results and on-the-job performance, the AFPA Health and Safety awards recognize superior company achievements. On behalf of Millar Western’s Whitecourt pulp mill, Safety & Loss Control Coordinator Scott Woodman accepted the award for Outstanding Achievement in Health and Safety Excellence (2006-2008), Pulp and Paper Mill Sector. The award was presented by the Honourable Ted Morton, Minister, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Don Mackenzie of Alberta Employment & Immigration and Tom Goldrup and Roger Loberg representing the AFPA.

The Government of Alberta’s EnviroVista Awards recognize excellence in environmental performance. Millar Western Environmental Coordinator Jeff Shipton stepped up to receive certificates from the Honourable Rob Renner, Minister of Environment, and Roger Loberg, Chair of AFPA, honouring the company’s Whitecourt wood products and Whitecourt pulp operations as EnviroVista Leaders.

Fibre Resource Director Trev Wakelin came forward for a presentation from SRD Minister Morton and AFPA Chair Loberg recognizing the re-certification of Millar Western’s Boyle lumber and woodlands operations under FORESTCARE, an independently audited program committing members to progressive practice and continuous improvement in forest management and manufacturing operations.
