PEFC Chain of Custody certification audit a success
On November 15, 2007, Millar Western’s Whitecourt woodlands operations successfully completed a comprehensive, independently administered audit to achieve certification under the internationally recognized PEFC Chain of Custody program.
Chain of custody certification provides verification that the system applied by Millar Western to trace the flow of wood meets the exacting requirements of the PEFC program, and accurately informs the company’s customers about the proportion of wood in its products sourced from forest lands certified as sustainably managed.
The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1999, promotes sustainably managed forests through independent, third-party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
In addition to the PEFC Chain of Custody program, Millar Western’s Whitecourt woodlands operations are certified under the CSA Z-809 sustainable forest management standard for the company’s FMA area, as well as to the ISO 14001 environmental management system standard, and the FORESTCARE codes of practice.
