Whitecourt named Forest Capital of Canada for second year

The Canadian Forestry Association and Canadian Institute of Forestry have named the Town of Whitecourt and Woodlands County as Forest Capital of Canada for the second consecutive year.

“The Town of Whitecourt and Woodlands County remain committed to sustainable forest management and have shown great pride and engagement in carrying the Forest Capital of Canada title”, said Dave Lemkay, General Manager of the CFA. “We are very pleased to work with both communities in extending the recognition for a second year. We wish to continue to support the excellent forest-related events and legacy projects that are planned for the region in 2014.”

The 2014 Forest Capital of Canada recognition was announced in Whitecourt on March 20, during a forest science technical session hosted by the CIF’s Rocky Mountain Section and attended by forest practitioners and professionals from across Alberta.  An official presentation ceremony will be held May 10 in conjunction with the Whitecourt Trade Fair, and events will be planned throughout the year to celebrate Whitecourt’s rich forestry history, and the vital role played by forests in maintaining the quality of life for people in Whitecourt, in more than 50 Alberta communities, and across Canada.
