thegreenestworkforce.ca: Millar Western participates in FPAC’s new recruitment campaign and internship contest

Canada’s forest products industry has secured a vibrant future, based on world-leading green credentials, success in emerging markets and innovative new products and technologies. As it gears up for a period of expansion, the sector is looking to hire between 60,000 or more people by 2020, for rewarding careers in professional, skilled trades, management, administrative and entry-level positions. In an effort to attract a young workforce to the industry, the Forest Product Association of Canada (FPAC) has launched a new website, thegreenestworkforce.ca, and announced an exciting student internship program that offers students hands-on experience at forest companies across Canada, including Millar Western.

thegreenestworkforce.ca was developed to introduce a new generation of students to the forest products industry and make them aware of the many diverse career opportunities available. The website encourages students to think not only about pay, but about all factors that contribute to a satisfying work life, for example, the kind of the work, the job location and work-life balance. The website provides access to currently available career opportunities and, as well, to job descriptions for key industry positions like foresters, accountants and engineers.  These career profiles provide insight into what the jobs might entail, the training required, and how much they could potentially pay, making them an excellent resource for students searching for a suitable career path.

In association with the launch of thegreenestworkforce.ca, FPAC has developed the Green Dream Internship contest that will award four-month paid internships to eight lucky applicants, plus an iPad mini to blog about their summer experience, and, in addition, the chance to win $5000. The contest provides an opportunity to receive job training, skills development, and real-world experience. To apply, students must submit a YouTube video explaining why they would be perfect for a Green Dream Internship position and drum up votes for their video. The videos attracting the most votes will be assessed by the participating companies and serve as the basis for selecting the lucky candidates  The contest closes on March 31, 2013, with internships to be awarded by April 15, 2013.

Millar Western is proud to be offering two of the eight internships — one as a Woodlands Forestry Assistant and the other as a Technical Support Student — both located at its Whitecourt, Alberta, operations.  All those interested in working in Canada’s dynamic, responsible and innovative forest industry are urged to enter the Green Dream Internship contest for a chance at a great summer work experience.
