Millar Western’s U of A scholarship fund surpasses $2.5 million in awards
For almost 30 years, scholarships funded by Millar Western have been helping students at the University of Alberta focus on their studies, instead of financial worries. Last year, the company’s fund marked a major milestone, topping $2.5 million in awards granted to U of A students since its inception.
The Millar Western Leadership Scholarships are funded via an endowment established in 1989. Both the number and value of awards granted have increased steadily over the years. More than 25 students a year now receive Millar Western Leadership awards of $3500 each. The impact of this financial support is reflected in the letters of appreciation sent by students:
“Not only are scholarships, awards and bursaries essential to recognizing the hard work and input of students today, but they also emphasize the importance of maintaining a well-rounded lifestyle. Students should be able to give back to their communities, attain high academic standing and be encouraged to take on leadership roles.” – Britney

Open to students in any field of study, entering from high school or transferring from other post-secondary institutions, Millar Western Leadership Scholarships are administered by the University of Alberta. The company has no involvement in award selection, beyond specifying that special consideration be given to students from Whitecourt and Fox Creek. Last year, 27 outstanding students received awards, recognizing their academic standing, leadership qualities and community involvement. And to date, 871 students have been granted a total of$2,610,500 in Millar Western awards.
