Millar Western works to attract a young workforce
As Canada’s forest industry looks to the future, one of its biggest challenges will be in the area of employee recruitment. Nation-wide, our sector will be looking to hire up to 60,000 people between now and 2020, and companies like Millar Western will face intense competition for skilled candidates in areas as wide ranging as forestry and trades, to IT, accounting and business management.
As part of our strategy to position our company as an employer of choice, Millar Western recently took part in career fairs at NAIT and MacEwan University. Our first foray into these recruitment events was a success, as our teams were kept busy by the hundreds of students who stopped by to learn more about our industry and our company.
In addition to our eye-catching display, which included presentations and giveaways, we offered up iPads to two lucky students who completed our on-line survey. More than 100 students took part, providing valuable insights into where they look for jobs and their career objectives. This and other information collected will be used to help us get the word out to prospective employees.
Congratulations to our survey contest winners, NAIT Power Engineering student Matthew Sieben and MacEwan business student Zosia Iwanciwski, who were pretty excited to receive their shiny new iPads from Millar Western Forest Products President and CEO Craig Armstrong. We wish Zosia and Matthew all the best with their studies and career plans!
