Millar Western seeks burner extension at Fox Creek
Millar Western is applying to Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development for a certificate of variance to allow continued operation of the wood-waste burner at our Fox Creek sawmill until July 1, 2016, 18 months beyond the current permit deadline. The burner’s operating parameters will remain the same, and those living and working near our Fox Creek operation will see no difference in the facility’s operation.
Since its reconstruction and reopening in 2012, the Fox Creek mill has been exploring alternative wood-waste disposal methods to allow for decommissioning of the burner. We have studied many options, and are now working with third parties and planning mill upgrades that will see our wood residuals used in the generation of renewable energy, in the manufacture of products like panelboard, pulp and pellets, and in land reclamation activities.
We are now advising local communities and area residents about our plans and seeking public input.
