Millar Western passes forest certification audits
Meeting the needs of global pulp and lumber customers for assurance that our products are derived from sustainable forest management practices is an increasingly demanding and important part of our work. To provide independent confirmation of our environmental performance, Millar Western has achieved certification under a growing list of international standards, each requiring regular audit by third parties.
In February, Millar Western passed a series of forest management and wood-tracking audits. Our Whitecourt, Fox Creek and Boyle woodlands operations were recertified to ISO 14001, a standard assessing the effectiveness of Environmental Management Systems. We also passed surveillance audits for PEFC Chain-of-Custody certification of our Whitecourt woodlands, pulp and lumber operations, and for CSA-Z809 sustainable forest management (SFM) certification of operations in our Whitecourt FMA area.

Among the findings, the auditor notes Millar Western’s “obvious dedication to long-term forest management,” reports zero areas of non-conformance, two areas of concern and nine opportunities for improvement, and highlights the company’s positive performance in communicating with stakeholders, reporting on forest management plans and providing economic opportunities for First Nations.
