Millar Western delivers Edmonton’s Tree of Lights

An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people came out to celebrate the beginning of this year’s holiday season with the lighting of the Millar Western-donated City of Edmonton Christmas tree in Churchill Square. With mild weather helping draw families to the outdoor event, this year’s turnout was the biggest yet seen at the Downtown Business Association’s Holiday Light-up.

Thanks and congratulations go out to Millar Western’s Wood Procurement Forester Max Matthews and his crew for, once again, safely and successfully delivering a giant Christmas tree from the Whitecourt area to downtown Edmonton. The natural beauty of this year’s 65-foot, 6,000 lb white spruce has been augmented with 14,000 LED lights strung by EPCOR, and the dazzling display will light up every evening until January 8th, for the enjoyment of all who live, work and visit in Edmonton’s downtown core.

Local musicians and other entertainers helped rev up the crowd at the lighting ceremony on November 17th, and special guests Mayor Stephen Mandel and Santa Claus led the countdown. Janet Millar, Director of Communications for Millar Western, attended the festivities and reports, “It was exciting to hear the roar of the crowd as the countdown ended and the lights turned on for the first time. So much hard work goes into this project behind the scenes, that it’s really nice to see the tree so well received.”

This is the eighth year Millar Western has provided the tree, as its Christmas gift to the people of Edmonton.
