Major capital projects completed at Boyle sawmill
A new small-log sawing line and a new wood waste processing system are both up and running well following completion of $8 million in capital projects at the Boyle sawmill.
February 21, 2005, marked the first day of production on the Boyle sawmill’s new small-log sawing line, one of two capital projects announced in October and now completed, on-time and on-budget. The projects, a primary breakdown unit for small logs and a hog fuel processing system, are aimed at enhancing lumber recovery, operating efficiency and waste utilization. Increasing the number of pieces of lumber cut from each log processed, the $6.5 million small-log sawing line started February 21 is expected to raise overall lumber recovery from the mill’s existing timber volume by 10% or more. And, since start-up in early January, the $1.4 million hog system has been processing mill byproducts for use as a fuel source by the neighbouring Alberta-Pacific pulp mill, allowing Millar Western to convert waste material into a useful product and discontinue regular operation of its wood waste burner.
