“Celebrate our nature” during Alberta Forest Week, May 3 to 9
The theme of this year’s Alberta Forest Week, May 3 to 9, is “Celebrate our nature”. Alberta enjoys abundant forest resources, thanks to careful resource management within a robust regulatory regime. Forest companies like Millar Western work closely with the Alberta government and other forest users to coordinate activities on the landbase and minimize environmental impacts. We ensure that harvesting levels are sustainable — never exceeding the forest’s ability to grow — and work to re-establish healthy forests in harvested areas, through tree planting and natural regeneration. Third-party certification provides assurance to stakeholders, including customers around the world, that our practices meet international sustainability standards. Continued vigilence will ensure that our forests, and the environmental, economic and social benefits they confer, will be available for generations to come.
One way to celebrate our forests is to play an active role in forest management by attending our upcoming open houses, which will be held from May 6 to 14 in the communities of Whitecourt, Fox Creek, Swan Hills and Ft. Assiniboine. As well as sharing our annual operating plans for 2015-16, we will be seeking the public’s input into the values that will serve as the basis for our 2017-27 detailed forest management plan. Alberta Forest Week and Arbour Day celebrations date back to 1884 and were introduced to instill the values of conservation and stewardship, as well as the environmental benefits, of our trees and forests. For family-friendly ways to connect with our forests, visit the Alberta government website.
