Alexis/Millar Western 2010 scholarship winners announced

Each year, the Alexis/Millar Western Scholarship Program awards up to six $1,000 scholarships to members of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation pursuing post-secondary studies.  Millar Western is pleased to announce the scholarship recipients for 2010:

Funded by Millar Western and administered by a committee representing both the forest company and the First Nation community, the Alexis/Millar Western scholarships serve to recognize the recipients’ past achievements while helping them achieve their future educational and career objectives.  Since 2005, the program has provided students with a total of $31,000 in awards.

“Our aim with these scholarships is to help students with some of the costs of completing an education and bring them closer to achieving their education and career goals,” said Millar Western Chairman Mac Millar.  “We congratulate the scholarship winners and wish them continued success.”

The Alexis/Millar Western Scholarship Program was established under the Forestry and Economic Development Agreement (FEDA) signed by the community and the company in 2004 and renewed in 2009.  In addition to scholarships, FEDA provides opportunties for economic development through harvesting and silviculture contracts and for direct input into forest management planning.

The scholarship program is open to members of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation pursuing post-secondary education.  Funding is awarded to applicants selected on the basis of academic performance, personal and career development plans and community involvement.  Application forms for next year’s awards will be available in the spring of 2011.
