Millar Western helps teach teachers about Boreal forest, forest products
On October 2nd, our Whitecourt mills played host to 28 teachers taking part in the Boreal Education Program – a 3-day professional development workshop presented byInside Education. The goal? To support their work in teaching forestry components of their science and careers classes, by giving them in-field, hands-on exposure to forests and forest products operations.
During just one day of the program, the teachers toured our lumber, pulp and bioenergy facilities, learning about the advanced technology we use to create green products from renewable resources. They also conducted forestry work at the Huestis Demo Forest, talked integrated land management, mountain pine beetles and caribou with Alberta government and U of A forestry experts, and heard from energy company Talisman, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and Mayor Maryann Chichak of Whitecourt.
Thanks to the folks at Inside Education for inviting us to take part in the Boreal Education Program, and to a great group of curious, dedicated teachers for your efforts on behalf of students and colleagues. And, thanks to our Millar Western staff for hosting – turns out you’re great teachers, too!
