Millar Western assists with tree-planting blitz

Millar Western woodlands staff recently enjoyed a sunny day helping forestry students raise funds while practicing forest renewal.

In a one-day tree-planting blitz held July 25, U of A forestry students planted some 2,200 seedlings in an area just south of Whitecourt, at a site tagged for use as a future community recreation area. The students were helped by our company’s Brent Huizinga, Charlotte Ratcliff, Marissa Green, Rashelle Lala and Kyle Rosychuk. Millar Western supplied the seedlings, and, together with the Canadian Institute of Forestry and Blue Ridge Lumber, donated a per-seedling planting fee to fund extracurricular educational opportunities for forestry students.

This is the third year Millar Western has helped organize the tree-planting blitz. The event not only serves as a student fundraiser, but helps remind all that forestry is a renewable resource, with forest companies planting many millions of trees in Alberta each year as part of sustainable forest management.
