Canada celebrates Forest Week, September 21-27
Forest Week is an annual celebration of Canadians’ connection to the forest. The theme for 2008 is “Canada’s Forests – Biodiversity in a Changing World.”
A healthy forest depends on complex relationships among all the living things that make up the ecosystem – that is, on biodiversity. Our knowledge of forest biodiversity is key to understanding how forests grow, thrive and change over time. Combined with the principles of sustainable forest management, this knowledge helps Canadians use their forests responsibly.
At Millar Western, we use the insights gained from research, stakeholder consultation, training and experience to reduce our footprint in the forest. Our research on water, fur-bearing mammals, birds, amphibians and other ecosystem elements have expanded our knowledge and improved our forest management practices. Preserving wildlife migration paths, leaving standing timber for bird habitat, and maintaining riparian buffers to protect water quality are some of the many ways we work, every day, to safeguard forest diversity.
