Millar Western’s Boyle Wood Products operations recertified to FORESTCARE
Millar Western’s Boyle Wood Products operations became the second division in the company to achieve FORESTCARE recertification under the Alberta Forest Products Association program’s newly revised standards and protocols.
Separate third party auditors were engaged for the mill and woodlands audits, with the aggregate results combining for a final score of 96% for the division.
This significant achievement reflects the commitment of Boyle employees to responsible environmental performance and stewardship. While considerable effort went into the audit processes, the ongoing practices of the mill and woodlands operations ensured that the recertification effort was simply an extension of business as usual for the division.
The Boyle operations scored very high in the areas of waste handling and hazardous material control. They also achieved high marks on training and the identification of potentially hazardous materials. And, while the final scoring of 96% is a proud achievement for all, questions from employees about how to improve upon the score are a clear indication of the high standards to which they hold themselves.
FORESTCARE is a third-party audited program, with requirements for public input and disclosure of results, developed by Alberta’s forest industry in consultation with government and public stakeholders. Established in 1993 as a standard governing care of the forest, community and environment, FORESTCARE is one of the oldest and most rigorous certification initiatives in North America, with a strong emphasis on performance in the field and continuous improvement.
